We all feel a sense of contentment, happiness and satisfaction, at points in our lives. Maybe contentment lasts for a while. Maybe it feels like you haven’t been content in a while. Maybe its sporadic. In a society that can be demanding, filled with anxiety and stress, contentment can feel like an unattainable concept.
The Apostle Paul met the idea of contentment head on. Paul battled with life and death situations constantly. He preached the Gospel in hostile environments under threat of beatings, imprisonment, stoning, and outright hatred for his message of God’s Truth. Despite all this, Paul lived a life of joyful acceptance. Whether unjustly imprisoned or brutally beaten, Paul accepted these punishments with joyful acceptance, a small price to pay in order to preach the Word of God. To bring all who would listen, the knowledge of God’s everlasting love for all who believe in Him.
Paul says, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing; that you may prove yourselves blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:14-15). These words from Paul echo loudly today. Believers are called to do all for the Glory of God. Content in all circumstances. A light for all to see.
“I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself” (Philippians 4:11). When we find ourselves in situations during our day, thinking life isn’t fair, take a second to think about the challenges and circumstances Paul faced and accepted with great joy. Whatever circumstance we find ourselves in, know that faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, glory for God, is the calling for believers. Jesus said, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world” (John 16:33). So powerful!
Contentment comes with knowing God is with us always. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
