Love of money

The “love of money” is a phrase we have all heard. It drives us in our everyday life, dictates decisions we make, and fills our minds with hopes and dreams of what could be if only I had more. This love of money becomes so consuming it most often competes with the Lord for our love, thoughts, and faith. We put more time and thought into our faith of what money could do for us, and less on what our faith in God does for us.

Jesus says, “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on Earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matt 6:19-21)

Jesus goes on to say, “No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matt 6:24).

Money in and of itself is not bad. You can certainly make and have money while serving the Lord first and foremost. The question we should all ask is am I serving God or am I serving the things of the world? Am I putting pursuit of worldly possessions before pursuit of a relationship with God? God gave us things to enjoy and he knows your heart. Always be thankful to God. If we try to follow and serve both God and money, we are not serving God at all. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17). Love God’s Word, learn God’s Word, and always choose the Godly path.
