Think of the interests you have. Maybe you enjoy exercise, nutrition, movies, sports, investing, traveling, boating, cars, bikes. Whatever your interest or passion, time is spent developing knowledge of your hobby and interest. We spend time reading, participating, talking, researching that hobby. We often don’t realize how much of our day is spent developing knowledge of our passions. They interest us in a way that growing in our hobbies becomes natural, a part of us. Do we think of developing a knowledge of God in this way? Do we think of loving God’s Word and understanding His Truth in the way we think of loving a new set of golf clubs and trying so hard to understand why we can’t hit the fairway every time? Nothing is wrong with hobbies, passions, and interests. But are you putting God aside in order to make time for hobbies?
Love for God’s Word, developing knowledge of God’s Word, growing in and with God’s Word. Paul writes, “We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might” (Col. 1:9-11). What a powerful statement from Paul. Grow in knowledge and wisdom to walk worthy of the Lord. God gave us the tools, the Truth, His Word in scripture to develop a knowledge and love for God’s Word that leads us to walk worthy of the Lord!
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17).
“For wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you. It will rescue you from the way of evil” (Proverbs 2:10-12).
As you develop knowledge for your hobbies and interests, do you feel your interest and wanting more knowledge grow? When you grow in God’s Word, your love for His Truth and His Word becomes stronger and stronger. God’s love and wisdom is pure. A solid foundation in a turbulent world. “I love those who love me, and those who search for me find me” (Proverbs 8:17).
